Who We Are
PushBlack is the nation's largest media advocacy organization for Black Americans, currently serving 9 million people monthly across all platforms. We use the power of narrative, especially Black History, to educate and activate our subscribers to build their personal power and create lasting economic and political change.
In 2021, PushBlack grew to 5.9M subscribers on Facebook Messenger and 500K followers on Instagram. We also ran the nation’s largest GOTV campaign for Black Americans. In May 2020, we launched Black History Year, our critically acclaimed podcast, which has received over 3M downloads. In January 2022, we launched the pilot season of our finance podcast, Building Black Dollars. We’re at 17k downloads already. As we continue building our podcasting network, many more shows that we produce will serve our wide listenership.
What We’re Looking For
We‘re hiring a diligent and passionate writer who can use their creative storytelling skills to produce compelling and inspiring stories on Black history. The writer will research Black history and current events, write strategic articles, help conduct content experiments, and perform light data analysis to identify the best ways to boost subscriber engagement and inspire Black audiences to take action. You will be expected to explore creative approaches to storytelling, identify insightful and empowering narratives and deliver emotionally-engaging stories.
The writer will pitch stories during weekly meetings and to the Managing Editor and write captivating, Black history and current events stories using PushBlack’s data-driven, mission-focused format.
What You’ll Be Doing
Produce a minimum of 8 stories per week and collaborate with the editorial team to revise and finalize content.
Work with the content team, product team, and editors to ensure content is error-free, engaging, and historically accurate.
Pitch new ideas weekly to the editorial team by sourcing current events and other related research to a relevant topic area.
Gather and analyze data based on experimentation and testing content published in Ads and broadcasts.
Assess audience engagement data to speed up our learning and subscriber growth, and discern the most cost-effective ways to acquire, and retain, subscribers.
Conduct research on your assigned monthly topics to create unique, quality content.
Follow content trends and generate new ideas to draw our audience's attention.
Learn our unique voice and writing style to ensure continuity across all content.
Use our comprehensive content delivery process to meet 100% of your deadlines.
Skills + Experience
Strong storyteller with experience in writing news stories, creative non-fiction, historical fiction, advocacy journalism, ethnographic analysis, or fiction.
Ability to promptly produce clean and concise copy.
Deadline-driven with excellent time management skills. You meet your deadlines and help others achieve the same.
Fast learner and receptive to feedback.
Experience using research and data to inform content production.
Experience in or demonstrated interest in Black history and Black liberation.
Familiarity with Google Suite applications.
This Would Put You Over The Top
Copyediting experience a MAJOR plus
Historical research experience
Community organizing or social justice activism experience
Remote work experience and familiarity with Slack, Trello, and/or other online productivity tools
Salary and Benefit
USD $55,018 - USD $72,011 / year
