Social Media Strategist & Writer
Inequality Media with Robert Reich seeks a new Social Media Strategist & Writer to lead our presence on Facebook, and support the copywriting for a range of social media posts and videos.
This is a full-time, exempt role with a salary range of $65,000 to $85,000 (or $90,000 to $115,000 if hired at the Senior Strategist level – see the Salary & Benefits section below for more information).
The role can be a hybrid role (with both virtual and in-person work based in Berkeley, CA) or performed remotely.
Co-founded by former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, Inequality Media is an award-winning non-profit that uses visual storytelling to educate and engage the public about economic inequality and the imbalance of power in our democracy.
Our approach is straightforward and effective. We produce compelling original content, share it through social media and media outlets, and partner with leading organizations to provide a way for viewers to mobilize, educate their communities, and take action.
The content we produce includes multiple videos per week that:
Take prominent stories in the news cycle related to structural trends in politics and the economy;
Explain the underlying facts and economics in a way that is both engaging and accessible; and
Tie the issue back to the larger story of how widening inequality undermines our economy and threatens our democracy (a context and analysis that is often missed by the mainstream media).
We do all of this with a small, highly collaborative team of six full-time staff members, as well as several expert consultants. Operating much like a start-up, we are a fast-paced organization which values innovation, teamwork, inclusiveness, respect, creativity, humor, and a “growth mindset.”
We’ve seen a lot of success with our work. Our audience includes over 6.5M followers across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok, and our videos have been viewed over 90 million times.
In addition, our “link posts” (a few paragraphs which describe and frame a link to a news article, research, or other interesting content) routinely make it into Facebook’s Top 10 daily link posts.
Now we’re ramping up to produce and distribute even more videos about what’s happening to our economy and our democracy, with a focus on reaching more young people and more persuadable voters being targeted by disinformation.
We are seeking a Social Media Strategist & Writer to join us for this exciting challenge.
Working closely with the Head of Content, the Social Media Strategist & Writer will be responsible for advancing messaging and narrating priorities through social media strategies and copywriting, with a focus on Facebook.
They will also be one of the primary writers for the organization, crafting longer posts for Facebook as well as other social media copy. Additional work products will include workshopping tweets with our Head of Content, and pitching new ideas for short-form and long-form videos. The person in this role may also write scripts for explainer videos that garner millions of views, depending on interest and experience.
In addition, we expect everyone on the team to actively contribute to Inequality Media’s organizational culture and growth.

Social Media Strategy and Management
Serve as the strategist for and manager of our Facebook presence, including Inequality Media and Robert Reich’s Facebook pages.
Set the daily content calendar on Facebook, including advance scheduling reposts of evergreen content. Our current publishing pace includes at least five Facebook posts per day, seven days a week, with weekend posts scheduled in advance.
Drafting all Facebook posts including in-depth “link posts,” our viral tweets as screenshots, and repost copy for our explainer videos.
Design and drive social media strategies and campaigns that yield engagement, awareness, and action on Facebook.
Set Facebook growth and engagement goals, identify key metrics for tracking progress toward those goals, establish a regular process for reporting on them, and then make sure we hit our goals by applying a strong understanding of digital best practices for testing and community management.
Identify new opportunities for growth on Facebook, including new types of content, networks, platform features/functionality, approaches, and partnerships, and adjust strategies as needed.
On a daily basis, get up to speed about major or trending news stories and current events that might relate to our work and/or our content calendar.
Manage our Facebook partnerships (and the cross-posting of videos), including with MoveOn, NowThis, Other 98%, and other progressive organizations and pages.
Stay up-to-date on Facebook trends, including new features, changes in the algorithms, and how our content compares to like-minded organizations and otherwise.
Generate ideas for both one-minute videos (for TikTok, YT Shorts, etc.) and longer-form explainer videos, independently and in collaboration with the team.
Repurpose and adjust Facebook copy for use on other platforms (Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn).
Other Content Production + Miscellaneous Duties
Support the Head of Content as the overseer of IM’s editorial mission, vision, and voice, including by workshopping tweets and weighing in on Instagram posts/stories and sharing copy, titles, and thumbnail images for videos.
Be the primary project manager for video scripts and the liaison between Robert Reich, one or more freelance writers, and the rest of the team.
Review videos in post-production to provide editorial notes as it relates to the successful visual storytelling of a script.
Draft, produce and send emails to our list via EveryAction and Action Network (typically once per week) that summarize our videos and entice people on our list to view them.
Edit, fact-check, and substantiate scripts and other content.
Attend monthly video shoots (when/if possible), including to operate teleprompter and work with Robert Reich to edit the scripts in real time based on changes made on set.
Oversee at least one social media intern as they draft posts and social copy for Facebook and other platforms.
Depending on interest and experience, draft video scripts with a keen eye toward social video (e.g., ensuring the first 5 seconds of each video is as engaging as possible).

You could be great for this role if:
You have at least 2 years of experience (paid or unpaid) working with social media pages and channels (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and/or TikTok) in an organizational context, including experience in audience development. 3-5 years of experience is preferred.
You have strong written communication skills, including the ability to quickly draft clean, persuasive, on-message and broadly accessible copy for a variety of audiences on Facebook and other social platforms.
You’re knowledgeable and passionate about current events, politics, and economics, and have a social justice analysis that aligns with ours.
You know how to use web publishing platforms and data analytics tools (e.g., Facebook Creator Studio and Sprout Social).
You have experience communicating with diverse communities on a large range of topics.
You are able to work well both independently and collaboratively within a small team.
You have enthusiasm in collaborating with external partners and the ability to manage those relationships towards successful outcomes
You are highly organized, have a strong and consistent attention to detail, and are able to juggle multiple competing priorities without letting something fall through the cracks.
You possess good problem-solving skills and you have an adaptable style that can drive progress even amid ambiguity and complexity.
You’re entrepreneurial and growth-oriented in your outlook and approach. You stay on top of social media trends and look for opportunities to improve your skills and processes as you learn more and the social media landscape changes.
You can work well with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and you have both a sensitivity to and appreciation for life experiences other than your own.
You are able to draw lessons and actionable insights from social media metrics, analytics data, and A/B testing.
Although not required, a strong candidate will have some of the following:
Experience creating videos designed for social media distribution
Experience with paid social, including overseeing Facebook content testing
Experience with data visualization
Demonstrated interest in political science, economic policy or economic history, and/or passion for building worker power.
Nuts and bolts political, community, labor organizing, or advocacy experience, or any experience working for progressive causes, campaigns or organizations.
Experience building large social audiences organically. Or experience managing large or influential social media accounts.
Experience with digital or communications work at the intersection of racial and economic justice. Extra bonus points for more than a passing familiarity with the Race-Class Narrative, either through training in the narrative framework or through digital or comms work at an organization that explicitly uses the framework.
A history of active involvement in a progressive social movement (esp. one that works to support economic justice, racial justice, and/or democracy and voting rights).
An eye for design and at least some ability to use software like Photoshop or Illustrator, meme & GIF generators, and/or apps like Canva.
Salary and Benefits
This role is a full-time, exempt position. As scoped out in the list of qualifications above, has an annual salary range of $65,000-$85,000.
However, Inequality Media might be willing to hire an exceptionally qualified candidate (whose experience includes 5+ years of experience in social media strategy, a proven track record of growth in engagement on social media, and significant experience writing excellent scripts for digital video) as a Senior Social Media Strategist & Writer with a salary range of $90,000 to $115,000.

Regardless of the role, Inequality Media provides 100% of medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage costs for employees. We offer discretionary time off (DTO) vacation and sick leave policies, in addition to days off for federal holidays and the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. A 401k retirement plan is available after one year of employment and Inequality Media will match an employee’s contribution of up to 4% of their salary.
Inequality Media has a professional development budget to support employee learning and development. We also offer partial reimbursement for the use of personal phones, computers, and technology, or will loan you the equipment you need to work successfully in the office or at home.
Work Location and Schedule
The role can be a hybrid role based out of our Berkeley, CA office or performed remotely within the US.
While remote applicants are also encouraged to apply and will be strongly considered, there is a value to having someone in this role work out of our office periodically.
As such, our preference is to hire someone local who is able to come to our offices in Berkeley at least twice a month and up to three times a week, if and when it’s consistent with public health guidelines.
For someone who is not local, there is a preference for someone who would be able to travel to our office once every month or two for a couple of days.
Regardless of where the work is performed, the work schedule will need to be the same as other members of our core team, who work West Coast hours.

The ideal start date for this role is on or before June 1, 2022 to allow for some overlap between the current person in the role and the new hire.
