Media and Communications Strategist

Job Title: 

  • Media and Communications Strategist 

Location: 

  • New York City or Washington DC (flexible working allowed) 

Salary: 

  • Early to mid 70s, commensurate with experience 

  • Annual inflation-based salary reviews 

  • Automatic 2% pay reward after two and four years  

Benefits:  

  • 25 days of paid annual leave (rising to 30 days after three years) 

  • Three months’ paid sabbatical after five years 

  • Last Friday of every month given as leave, with additional leave given following periods of peak delivery, to support wellbeing and mental health

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Working with colleagues and partners around the world to help devise and deliver innovative campaign strategies and tactics through social, online or legacy media 

  • Helping spot and deliver media coverage and other story-telling opportunities that support our campaign objectives and drive change 

  • Writing and editing communications materials (op-eds and articles, press releases, campaign strategies, social media posts, web copy, media pitches, partner/donor/board updates, annual reports, etc.) 

  • Helping build and nurture excellent contacts in national and international media based in the US, and supporting colleagues to do the same in other countries 

  • Helping conceive and create/oversee creation of communications products, such as videos, websites and social media content 

  • Developing the communication skills and confidence of colleagues by contributing to organizational development and training plans 

  • Helping evaluate and learn from our communications work to improve our future campaigns 

  • Helping drive creativity and innovation within the organization and with partners  

Essential knowledge/experience 

  • At least three years working in a media, PR or another communications role 

  • Experience of securing impactful media coverage 

  • Working knowledge of digital and social media 

  • Internationalist, with a keen interest in both global politics and US domestic politics 

Essential skills and attributes 

  • Compelling storyteller and exceptional writer, able to adapt your style to suit any audience  

  • Willing and able to advise on strategy, but also be hands on in delivery when needed  

  • Ability to take a brief and rapidly master new areas of work 

  • High levels of ambition, energy, determination and focus  

  • Able to work well under pressure and respond swiftly to changing demands and priorities when required  

  • Exceptional team worker with low-ego attitude 

  • Strong verbal communication skills 

  • Committed to Crisis Action’s aims and methods 

  • Has the right to live and work in the US 

Desirable knowledge/experience  

  • Relevant contacts with major international media outlets (e.g. New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, NPR, Al Jazeera, Xinhua, etc.) 

  • Knowledge (and eagerness to expand this knowledge) of media and digital environments outside the US, especially in Russia, China, Europe, Latin America, Asia and/or Africa 

  • Working knowledge of at least one additional language, ideally from Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin and/or Russian  

  • Working knowledge of undertaking or overseeing video, design or web projects 

  • Experience of working with influencers and high-profile individuals 

  • Experience of public mobilisation and engagement (such as petitions, event organisation, letter-writing campaigns and/or building and engaging online communities) 

  • Experience in fundraising or engaging donors 

  • Knowledge or experience of campaigning on international issues and/or armed conflict  

  • Experience of working in coalitions between multiple organizations and/or across different cultures 

  • Experience of delivering training 

  • Experience of campaigning in multiple markets
