Communications Coordinator
NY Renews is seeking a full-time Communications Coordinator to ensure an effective narrative strategy, effective use of communications resources, and overall strong campaigns as we work for climate jobs and justice in New York.
Position overview
The Communications Coordinator will be a critical member of our coalition and staff team, ensuring that there is a coherent message and narrative across campaigns and program areas. The Communications Coordinator will chair the Media and Communications Committee. They will also work closely with the Organizing Committee, Steering Committee, staff, and others across the coalition to ensure that our efforts are effective at generating earned media, have a consistent and effective narrative, and that we generate effective and accessible tools and resources The person in this role will also supervise our social media efforts and digital organizing ensuring they are effectively coordinated with organizing and other campaign activities, and that the coalition effectively uses communications resources.
What You’ll Do
Narrative Strategy Development & Internal Organizing: The Communications Coordinator’s most central job is working with the committees and membership of NY Renews to ensure that we have a clear and effective narrative strategy, and then ensuring all members have effective tools for engaging and communicating in line with the shared strategy. Activities include:
Chairing our Communications & Media Committee and managing comms & media volunteers and coalition members
Directing & facilitating coalition processes to develop narrative and communications strategy and outreach materials, including talking points, one-pagers, messaging guides, and more
Helping coalition members maintain message discipline through media coaching, talking point development and more
Developing communications materials
Earned media: the Communications Coordinator is the key coalition staffer who engages directly with the press to build relationships and place earned media. They are not the primary “spokesperson” for the coalition, but coordinates and works with coalition member organizations to ensure that the appropriate spokespeople are always available. Activities include:
Pitching earned media stories, building relationships with reporters
Connecting reporters and journalists to spokespeople within the coalition
Maintaining a list of coalition spokespeople
Supporting spokespeople with media coaching, talking points, media training, etc
Drafting press releases, media advisories, and statements as necessary
Drafting op-eds and letters to the editor
Coordination and support for distributed media & social media efforts: the Communications Coordinator works with the digital organizer, Media and Communications Committee, and volunteers to support distributed media and social media action by our volunteers. The person in this role ensures that our volunteer and member leaders have the information and resources they need to effectively build momentum and popular understanding of our fight for climate jobs and justice. Activities include:
Creating media toolkits and social media toolkits
Training, support and 1-1s for action leads who are running their own media
Maintaining and updating local press lists
Running distributed LTE and local media efforts
Coordinate with and support member organizations and volunteers
Popular education programs -- explaining the legislation and movement to our people and beyond along with partners.
Direct legislative & executive advocacy: the Communications Coordinator along with the entire staff team is expected to do direct advocacy and engagement of policymakers. Activities include:
Working with coalition members to draft and circulate formal statements and lobbying materials
Joining advocacy and mobilization events and meetings
Supervise Volunteers, paid fellows, and a staff digital organizer: A part of the Communications Coordinators role in accomplishing the above is to supervise the coalitions shared communications and media activities.
Who You Are & Keys to Success
Necessary Qualifications
(Required) Prior experience working on earned media in a campaign/community organizing setting
Experience working on issues of social justice (could include climate, racial, economic, social, housing, gender, or other justice issues)
Prior experience working with digital media and organizing platforms that move supporters to take action (driving calls, petition signatures, donations, etc)
Bonus Qualifications
Applicants with personal experience of environmental justice.
Familiarity with our core tools (we use Action Network, Squarespace, ActBlue, New/Mode, and Canva, familiarity with similar tools/platforms is ok) and ability to learn new tech tools/platforms and apply them to organizing
Prior experience in the environmental/climate movement and comfort with tailoring our message to different audiences
Knowledge of NY political landscape and communities.
Bilingual in English & Spanish - a salary bump will apply for multilingual candidates

What Else You Should Know
Location
NYC or Albany preferred but open to remote for the right candidate; must be located in New York State.
Travel
The NY Renews team is currently working remotely. Once it is safe to do so, the person in this role will be expected to travel within New York State up to 20% of the time during the NYS legislative session. Candidates located within New York State are preferred.
Salary and Benefits
$65,000 - $75,000 based on experience.
This is an exempt salaried position.
NY Renews provides employees 100% health and dental insurance and 80% of costs for family coverage, along with a generous paid time off, family leave, and holiday package for full time staff.
