About the Organization
Documented is a nonprofit news organization that produces reporting for and about immigrant New Yorkers. We provide original news stories on the ground-level impact of shifts in labor policy, law enforcement practices and bureaucratic requirements. We also report on the effects of new federal directives as well as Q&As and instructional guides that inform New Yorkers about food, health, financial aid and legal issues. We have won awards from the Deadline Club, the Online News Association, the Edward R. Murrow Awards and Local Independent Online News Publishers. Our work has been mentioned by The New York Times, The Washington Post, in federal lawsuits, at the New York City Council and many other places.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced fundraiser to join us on a consulting basis to increase our fundraising from major donors ($1,000/year and up). An ideal candidate will have proven experience and success in securing major contributions from a variety of sources, and extensive knowledge of the philanthropic community in the New York area. An interest in local journalism and/or immigration/refugee issues is a plus.
The Major Gifts Consultant will report to the Development Director, working closely with the entire Documented team of journalists, Co-Executive Directors, and bookkeepers, to develop and implement annual major donor cultivation and solicitation action plans that can be updated and replicated by the Documented team at the close of the contract period. The position is largely remote, but familiarity with the NY funding landscape is necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Help establish fundraising goals, pipeline analysis, stewardship strategy, event planning, and communications to donors throughout the year to increase dollars raised for Documented’s annual campaign and ongoing membership drives.
Provide training and guidance to Documented on how to implement best practice fundraising strategies and systems.
Work with Documented team to identify, research, and initiate relationships with individual donors, and secure funding.
Identify, research and cultivate donor prospects utilizing research tools, Documented networks and events, external events, and current donor relationships. Complete prospect profiles of potential donors, connectors, and board members.
Develop a stewardship program aimed at organizing relationships and cultivating deeper ties with donors.
Write and/or review presentations, proposals, reports, impact updates and other donor materials, as needed.
Maintain progress in our donor database, helping to shape best practices, maintain high-quality data entry and analysis, and generate reports as needed.
Support fundraising events/initiatives when necessary.
Actively participate as a member of the Documented team in sharing resources, supporting team goals, and collaborating in a variety of ways to thoroughly understand and expertly articulate vision and funding priorities to donors and prospects.
Knowledge and Skills Desired
5+ years of development experience with a strong background and proven success in individual major gift fundraising. Proven experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time and experience in coaching others in building similar relationships.
Extensive knowledge of the NYC philanthropic community.
Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Ability to set goals strategically and oversee execution, whether in-person or in a virtual setting. Ability to work on multiple projects with overlapping deadlines.
An understanding of prospect research and cultivation strategies, as well as experience with fundraising database systems (knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus).
Strong interpersonal skills, proven networking skills and a genuine desire to connect deeply with people from a diversity of backgrounds.
Experience working with newly-established nonprofits is a plus.
Salary
The compensation for this role is $110/hour.
Eventually, we hope to be able to return to our office full-time, but as of now, the position will be largely remote. We highly value lived experiences in the issues we cover as a news organization. We also understand the difficult work realities due to the pandemic and are open to accommodating people with different work requirements.
