Senior Communications Manager

Position Title: Senior Communications Manager

Reports to: Director

Location: New York, NY (remote work is possible but Candidates must have permit to work in the United States)

Duration: Full-Time

Salary Range: $75-$90k

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

The Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) is a women’s global advocacy organization based in New York. Officially founded in 1991 in the run-up to the Earth Summit (UNCED, 1992,) WEDO, a champion for women’s rights, has built a reputation as a trailblazer in promoting human rights, gender equality and the integrity of the environment, notably in sustainable development.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Communications Manager will join the WEDO team to shape an entirely new division at our organization. This is a leadership position within an established, global advocacy organization, and the person filling this role will play a key role in developing and implementing a communications strategy to support our strategic plan and programmatic priorities. They will partner with staff across our organization to translate our feminist policy goals for multiple audiences, increase our brand visibility, and drive advocacy efforts.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Partner with WEDO staff and leadership to develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to achieve WEDO’s short- and long-term goals, including establishing key metrics and measurements of success;

  • Develop content for WEDO’s communications channels, including social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook), email, and our website;

  • Improve the WEDO website in partnership with external consultants and staff experts;

  • Build relationships with key journalists, develop press releases, and write op-eds in order to advance media coverage at the intersection of gender equality and environmental justice;

  • Create systems for storybanking and storytelling;

  • Enhance WEDO’s position as a key expert through media and other writing and speaking opportunities;

  • Develop and monitor a communications budget;

  • Source and manage multiple outside vendors and consultants, including designers, developers, and PR agencies;

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least five years’ experience managing communications in a nonprofit environment;

  • Demonstrated comfort working with media and journalists;

  • A culture change or narrative change orientation to communications;

  • Experience across digital and traditional mediums, demonstrating continuous learning and a desire to stay abreast of trends and standards;

  • Excellent writing ability;

  • Ability to manage complex projects and competing priorities under tight deadlines;

  • Familiarity with civil society participation in international policy, particularly the United Nations, and international movement-building;

  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental justice and intersectional feminism;

  • Fluency in English, with proficiency in another language as advantageous;

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a small-team-oriented environment while also carrying out responsibilities with considerable independence;

  • Comfort with uncertainty and ambiguity;

  • Critically thinking, positive and fun individual.

Salary

USD 75,000 - USD 90,000
