Finance Director
Arts Midwest is seeking a Finance Director to lead the operations of the finance department. This would be a great position for someone with a strong background in accounting who is interested in expanding their leadership skills in a mission-driven organization with a diverse mix of revenues. This position is currently remote due to Covid-19; we welcome candidates seeking permanent remote work arrangements as well.
We’re looking for someone who values collaboration, enjoys process improvement, and excels at project management. The Finance Director will join a team consisting of a full-time finance manager (staff position) and a part-time CFO (contract position.)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads Finance Department operations (45%)
Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for management team and Finance Committee.
Manages annual single audit, 990 preparation, and state charitable registrations.
Works collaboratively with program staff to develop and monitor budgets and forecasts.
Provides management financial information for effective decision-making.
Educates program staff on financial results and significant budget variances.
Monitors cash flow and makes recommendations for investment of excess cash.
Supports financial relationship with National Endowment for the Arts and ensures all requirements are met.
Assists Development staff with creation of grant budgets and reports.
Monitors use of donor restricted funds in accordance with grant agreements.
Trains staff on use of Arts Midwest’s financial systems and processes.
Identifies opportunities that drive continuous improvement and enhance Arts Midwest’s mission and service to constituents.
Ensures compliance with GAAP, federal regulations, and grant requirements.
Manages annual fiscal management calendar.
Performs a range of accounting duties (35%)
Manages monthly close process.
Records bank activity including deposits and automated payments.
Manages accounts receivable and works with departments to ensure timely collection.
Posts monthly general ledger entries in Intacct.
Reviews general ledger accounts for accuracy and posting errors.
Pays vendor invoices in Bill.com after approval by designated individuals.
Works with Grants team to ensure all grants are paid out on a timely basis.
Tracks corporate credit card purchases via Expensify.
Records donations and event fees received electronically via Authorize.net and our online donation platform (currently using Mighty Cause.)
Performs monthly reconciliation with Salesforce with the Development team
Reconciles bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts.
Maintains electronic and paper files and records in accordance with best practice retention standards.
Oversees bi-weekly payroll process (5%)
Approves Paylocity processing register prior to submission.
Ensures retirement and other benefit payments are made on a timely basis.
Allocates salary and benefit expenses to various programs and grants.
Monitors state and federal compliance requirements.
Provides supervision and leadership to Finance Manager (10%)
Participates in decisions regarding the content of jobs and the number of staff within the functional areas under the span of control.
Makes and participates in decisions on matters of hiring, transfer, suspension, lay off, recall, promotion, discharge, assignment, reward, adjusting grievances or disciplining employees.
Sets goals and objectives and monitors performance.
Conducts ongoing feedback, coaching, mentoring, and timely formal performance reviews and encourages employee growth and development by identifying, suggesting, and supporting professional development opportunities.
Plans the work schedule to meet department demands.
Additionally, this role (5%)
Maintains professional competence and stays abreast of trends and innovations.
Attends training, conferences and meetings and reviews relevant literature.
Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
Represents the organization in the community, with stakeholders, and on various committees, as applicable.
Communicates with others relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work-related needs.
Communications include responsibility for maintaining relationships that are key to the function.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The job requires 5+ years of experience in accounting including financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger experience. Supervisory experience is required. Grant reporting and compliance experience preferred. A commitment to the arts is also preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR SUCCESSFUL JOB PERFORMANCE
• Ability to make decisions and act within established policies and procedures.
• In-depth working knowledge of general accounting concepts and practices - GAAP.
• Knowledge and in-depth understanding of nonprofit finance practices, including foundation and government contracts, temporarily restricted funds, etc.
• Knowledge of and ability to operate accounting software and standard office hardware and software including databases and web-based software programs.
• Ability to maintain highest confidentiality when dealing with sensitive or private information.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to effectively organize time and anticipate, plan, and manage multiple priorities with deadlines.
• Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively present information and respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences, and reading comprehension skills sufficient to read, understand and interpret varied financial documents and work-related materials.
• Ability to work independently, and as a part of a team.
• Interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and/or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships.
Benefits
Salary: $68,000 - $72,000
