Leadership for Educational Equity is a nonprofit leadership development organization inspiring and supporting a network of civic leaders to eradicate the injustice of educational inequity.

Position Summary:

The Senior Director, Community Organizing is responsible for ensuring that excellent organizing tools, training, and tactics resulting in significant policy change for kids are provided nationally and in all LEE regions. The senior director accomplishes this by being a strategic planner in building community organizing, issue advocacy and campaign program development to be made available to the Regional Impact (RI) team and LEE members.

In partnership with Directors of Develop and Discern on the Organizing Leadership team they will offer strategic thought partnership and guidance on specific campaigns and professional development. As a liaison to other national teams at LEE to direct the necessary communications and training resources to RI staff and the member-led Organizing Alliances across the country they support. The Senior Director, Community Organizing sits on the Organizing Leadership Team, where they contribute to the overall team strategy by leading and managing organizing strategy with LEE’s colleagues, other streams of leadership development.

As a part of the National Impact team, this position partners closely with the other National Impact Teams (Elected Leadership, Policy and Advocacy, and Learning, Design and Development) and the Regional Impact team, ensuring a cohesive organizing vision, strategy and outcomes. This role will also manage a team of people, and must have the skills to be able to build and run diverse and inclusive teams while managing toward strong results. This position reports to the Vice President, Organizing Leadership.

Position Location: Flexible

Travel Requirements: 50%, National travel as needed to conferences, trainings, and regional actions

Note: All organizational travel is currently suspended due to COVID-19

Responsibilities:

Strategic Thinking & Content Development (25%)

  • Manage the development of the organizing platform and leadership development materials that aligns with LEE’s organizing model and philosophy

  • Supervise development of online/blended tools for LEE members to learn fundamentals and specialized campaign skills in organizing on LEE’s platform

  • Supervise development of the digital organizing program and digital leadership engagement program 

  • Utilize and devise systems and supports for data entry, data tracking and impact analysis across multiple qualitative and quantitative metrics towards outcomes

  • Collaborate across teams to understand the organizing platform needs and manage the team to design those tools in-house and with external firms

Team Management (25%)

  • Build and manage a team toward meaningful impact as measured by outcomes and organizational goals

  • Engage in weekly check-ins with each individual report and whole team meetings

  • Engage in frequent formal and informal performance feedback cycles to support individual and team success and growth

  • Support the development and implementation of the organizing team learning scope and sequence that clearly values diversity, equity, and inclusion

Coaching & Collaboration (20%)

  • Collaborate across the matrix of other departments within LEE to ensure communication and cooperation in alignment to goals and outcomes

  • Provide high-level strategy support coaching to the Regional Impact team on strategy creation and tool utilization that leads to impact

  • Provide strategic advice and coaching to diverse LEE members for equitable, high-impact organizing campaigns and organizations across the country

  • Collaborate with leaders in the field of organizing to learn, develop, and implement innovative organizing strategies on the LEE platform

Learning Development and Facilitation (20%)

  • Supervise and provide content facilitation and contribute content development for staff and member-facing organizing leadership development experiences

  • Facilitate and support member and staff-facing organizing learning experiences in tandem with Directors of Organizing

  • Leadership and other National Impact teams for diverse audiences

  • Collaborate with partners across other teams to integrate organizing principles into their content

  • Evaluate the success of learning experiences based on multiple quantitative and qualitative metrics and adjust strategy

Special Projects (10%)

  • Additional projects as assigned by the Vice President, Organizing Leadership

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or commensurate years of work experience

  • 7 years relevant professional work experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in community organizing and leadership development with community-based organizations managing complex workstreams towards successful outcomes, building successful relationships with a variety of stakeholders, and leading to equity-driven policy changes

  • 4 years of management experience as a supervisor, developer of organizers, and/or institution builder

  • Strong track record in base-building, campaigning (issue and electoral), and leadership development

  • Deep passion for educational equity and belief in LEE’s mission and theory of change

  • Highly effective communication, coaching and team building skills, with demonstrated experience across lines of difference

  • Demonstrated expertise and success driving teams to impact and measuring progress in qualitative and quantitative metrics

  • Ability to work remotely to communicate and collaborate within a geographically dispersed team

  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and develop strategies to drive policy change

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field (MPA, MPP or PhD) 

  • 10 years relevant professional work experience

  • Experience in digital organizing and strategies

  • Demonstrated success in innovative practices that leverage resources and enable significant growth

  • Management of geographically dispersed team, with evidence of strong team culture and outcomes

  • Experience with SalesForce, Slack and blended learning tools such as Thought Industries
