Fundraiser
Wiki Education envisions a world in which students, scholars, scientists, archivists, librarians, and other members of academic and cultural institutions share their knowledge with the general public through Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other open collaboration projects on the web.
We are looking for an energetic and results-driven fundraiser who will be able to raise funds for our cause and regularly meet or surpass fundraising targets (start date: February 2020).
JOB DESCRIPTION
Working closely with the Executive Director, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the financial sustainability of Wiki Education Foundation’s operations and programs.
In the beginning, you’ll focus heavily on building new relationships rather than maintaining existing ones (for a simple reason: our relationship with existing donors is strong, so our main goal at this point is to expand our prospect pipeline and to attract new funders).
A successful candidate for this position will be able to research grant making organizations or corporate sponsors, gain insight into their interests and beliefs, and position our organization to them. She / he will be able to move prospects quickly through the pipeline and successfully close the deal.
We are seeking a person who is hands-on and results-oriented: who enjoys picking up the phone and evangelizing on behalf of a successful high-impact nonprofit.
JOB DUTIES
Develop and maintain a thorough and accurate understanding of Wiki Education’s programs to effectively connect supporters to funding needs
Substantially grow Wiki Education Foundation’s donor base by cultivating strong relationships with prospects, securing support from philanthropic institutions and corporations, and (to a much lesser extent) soliciting donations from individuals
Ensure that the donor/funder experience is positive and constructive; ensure Wiki Education Foundation stewards ongoing engagement with all donor constituencies and key stakeholders
Communicate directly with and/or ensure that Wiki Education Foundation’s supporters and partners receive timely ongoing communications, acknowledgment, and appropriate donor recognition opportunities
Work collaboratively with senior staff on materials necessary to secure financial support and partnerships, and to comply with requirements for reporting on use of funds
Other duties as required
REQUIRED SKILLS
Strong track record of attaining challenging annual fundraising goals
Minimum of 3 years’ experience soliciting and successfully obtaining grants in the five- to high six-figure range
Exemplary communication abilities and outgoing, yet poised personality
Ability to effectively establish and maintain strong relationships with donors and potential donors
A strong believer in the value of providing the general public with accurate and trustworthy information who can powerfully embody the vision of the Wiki Education Foundation
Enjoys being part of a small and very energetic team; must enjoy rolling up their sleeves and getting things done
Well-organized and detail-oriented with the ability to take responsibility for and follow through on projects assigned in an ever-changing and fast-paced environment
ABOUT WIKI EDUCATION
Since 2014, Wiki Education, a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has supported instructors at more than 500 universities who have used Wikipedia as a teaching tool. These efforts have resulted in more new content than was in the last print edition of Encyclopædia Britannica. New editors recruited through Wiki Education account for nearly 20% of new contributors to the English Wikipedia.
Since 2018, Wiki Education has been training scholars and scientists from a diverse range of institutions in contributing their subject-matter expertise to high-profile Wikipedia pages that reach millions of readers. It collaborates with institutions like the National Archives and the Smithsonian, as well as with a range of academic associations on projects aimed at better informing the general public.
Before building Wiki Education from the ground up, our ED Frank Schulenburg served on the Executive Team of the Wikimedia Foundation (the organization that operates Wikipedia) and spearheaded a number of global initiatives aimed at improving the encyclopedia’s coverage and content quality.
