Development Manager
The Development Manager will be the primary writer on the fundraising team, will serve as a project manager for assigned fundraising projects, and will provide general support and assistance across the fundraising team. This person will write grant proposals, reports, and related documents for opportunities ranging from $5K - $2M+ for foundations, corporations, government, and individuals. The manager will prepare and assist with other documents related to fundraising, including annual reports, slide presentations, budgets, flyers, and online communications. The manager will work closely with the Director of Development, Executive Director, Chief Scientific Officer, and Chief Scientists, is expected to develop strong working relationships across the organization, and become well versed in all BioBus programs.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, enjoys a diverse workload, and is excited to be a part of a small team working across many revenue streams, with the opportunity to work on foundation and corporate grants, major donors, online fundraising campaigns, and government fundraising. You are a good candidate for this position if you have a customer service attitude, are a good writer, and have fundraising, communications, hospitality, or events experience.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Development, based in New York City, while currently working remotely. Base salary is budgeted at $45-$59K, with a potential 10% bonus bringing total compensation to an anticipated $50-65K. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, transit, FSA, and flexible PTO, remote working, and family leave policies.
Expected Responsibilities
Write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals in a variety of styles
Research, write, edit, and submit letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and grant reports, working across the organization to have a strong understanding of programs and outcomes
Prepare fundraising emails, text for print communications, slide presentations, and other activities to support fundraising
Coordinate activities and materials for fundraising opportunities, by identifying and assigning tasks and completing technical submission for assigned opportunities
Conduct grant/prospect research to identify funding opportunities, recommend projects for applications, and recommend prioritization of opportunities, as assigned
Analyze the interests of donors and prospects and help opportunity owners develop and articulate compelling pitches for grants, as assigned
Understand programs and impact, gather stories, and collect information and photos to share with donors and prospects by frequently visiting programs, reviewing evaluations and program data in Salesforce, and meeting with Chiefs, Execs, and other scientists
Maintain a library of standard text, photos, and other materials regularly used for fundraising
Provide guidance on budgets and financial reports, focusing on ensuring budgets and reports meet funder requirements, for assigned opportunities
Provide administrative support for the fundraising team, including preparing tax receipts, formatting documents, and using Salesforce database to track grant and fundraising activities and support fundraisers to track their activities
Qualifications (required)
B.A./B.S. required, preferably in a communications, English, writing, or a nonprofit-related or science field
2+ years relevant work experience
Good writing skills, including the ability to tell a compelling story while working with tight word limits, write narratives from program outlines, and incorporate qualitative and quantitative data in a writing
Creative, strategic and analytical thinker with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast paced environment
Able to take initiative, learn, grow, and improve from past experiences
Ability to work with diverse and multi-disciplinary teams; collaborative
Excellent time-management and organizational skills; efficient
Thorough; proven attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills
Strong and polished interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
Willing, interested in, and able to participate in occasional early morning, evening or weekend events that support BioBus programming and fundraising efforts
Encouraged
Science, education, and/or social justice background or interest
Proven success in grant writing, obtaining new and renewal grants and increasing grant awards
Proficient in grant/prospect research
Familiarity with budgeting and financial reporting, particularly for grants
Project management skills and experience
Experience with Salesforce or similar fundraising database
Proficient in G-Suite, including Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Calendar
Communications experience, such as writing for press releases, social media, and print media
