Staff Attorney and Investigations Coordinator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide direct fair housing counseling services to clients experiencing housing discrimination, including providing information on coverage of fair housing laws, making reasonable accommodation requests, providing advocacy, intervention and/or mediation services, preparing administrative complaints for filing, and acting as representative in administrative complaints
Coordinate fair housing investigations, evaluate test methodology, provide feedback on structuring complaint and audit-based tests, analyze completed rental/lending/other tests
Recruit, train, hire, and manage a diverse and highly trained tester pool, overseeing work quality, while maintaining accurate and updated records for tester applicants and trained testers
Conduct fair housing trainings; present fair housing information to housing providers, social service providers, advocacy organizations, and/or community members
Assist Supervising Attorney with lawsuits and/or collaborate with counsel of record to support agency lawsuits
Conduct fair housing trainings; present fair housing information to housing providers, social service providers, advocacy organizations, and/or community members
Assist in education and outreach efforts, including attending community and advocacy organization meetings, municipal/local government hearings and/or meetings, public housing authority meetings, and other relevant outreach events as agency representative as appropriate; prepare formal written comments on any relevant documents or topics
In collaboration with other senior/management staff members, implement programs designed to meet various grant goals and compile data for quarterly reports; contribute to drafting new grant proposals
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Commitment to fair housing and civil rights
Excellent oral communication skills, including public speaking and interpersonal skills
Strong analytical and organization skills and ability to manage multiple cases and investigations
Ability to meet project deadlines and maintain accurate records
Self-motivation and ability to work with limited supervision
Ability and desire to work effectively with a diverse community without regard to race, religion, sex, color, national origin, age, sexual orientation, familial status, or disability
Ability to exhibit patience, tact and respect when dealing with the general public and other staff members
Ability to represent the agency effectively in a professional and exceptional manner
Valid California driver's license and use of car
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to speak and/or write in Spanish
Ability to understand legal documents and federal and state fair housing statutes and regulations
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Salesforce, PowerPoint, Zoom, and other software
Knowledge of federal and state fair housing laws
Supervisory skills
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have a J.D. and be an active member of the California bar. Fair housing and/or civil rights experience is also highly desirable. Spanish speaking and writing skills preferred.
*This position requires the use of a car and some non-traditional work hours for enforcement activities.
