Grant Writer
About the Org:
Based in South Carolina, The Watering Hole is a young poetry nonprofit (since 2013) that builds poetry education resources. Our goal is to equalize inequalities related to literary arts education and resources, with a particular focus on Southern writers and readers of color. We are a small office of remote-working volunteers, in the process of developing our core team of paid employees. This position is one which the hired candidate would play a key role in shaping. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.
Primary Function:
The Grant Writing position is part-time contractual work, but expected to expand to a full-time position with proven success. The Grant Writer will work directly with the Executive Director to develop and execute a grant strategy that guides the submission of proposals to private and corporate foundations and government funders in support of TWH programs and operations.
Major Responsibilities include:
1. Research--
Researching, identifying, and evaluating new private and public funding sources
2. Submission--
Developing, composing, and submitting compelling letters of intent and grant proposals and managing the grant development process from conception through final reporting. This includes formulating program budgets (with the help of the Executive Director) and constructing outcome measurement framework.
3. Managing--
Coordinating responses between funders and the nonprofit, including e-mails, funds requests, and reporting. (This excludes tracking expenditures, which The Executive Director will handle.)
4. Reporting--
Collecting member success stories for use in grant reports, developing quarterly funding reports for the Board of Directors, supporting the design and implementation of an overarching outcome measurement strategy.
Strong applicants have/are:
A track record of successfully won grants
Previous experience with nonprofit development
Strong initiative and follow-through on responsibilities
Excellent problem-solvers, with strong analytical and interpersonal skills
Salary & Schedule:
Wages will be hourly, plus commissions based on each grant won. The starting rates are commensurate with experience. The time commitment needed will depend for example on upcoming deadlines. We expect it to average 5 to 20 hours per week.
Experience:
Grant Writing: Minimum of 3 years experience or 6 successfully won grants (Preferred)
Non-profit: 1 year (Preferred)

Qualifications and Competencies Required:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job.
Bachelor’s degree or high in grant writing, communications, English, business, non-profit management, or equivalent, plus three years in nonprofit development field or 6 successfully won grants.
Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects, define necessary tasks, and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
Highly organized and exceptional attention to details and deadlines.
Able to work under pressure to meet deadlines; must be able to analyze and prioritize tasks.
Strategic thinker with excellent analytic abilities.
Demonstrated ability to develop programmatic budgets and outcome measurement frameworks.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with various constituents.
Adaptable, flexible, and enjoys doing work that requires frequent shifts in direction
Excellent and persuasive communication skills, both written and verbal.
Prefers working in innovative or unconventional ways or on tasks that require creativity
Excellent computer fluency, including ability expertise with Google Drive, Adobe Acrobat or higher, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other electronic support systems.
Possess a complete understanding of contracts and grants.
Knowledge of and strong relationships with current and prospective funders.
Strong commitment to TWH’s mission.
Ability to maintain the utmost confidentiality and ethical standards
Comfortable and knowledgeable in and among communities of color
Ability to pass a criminal background check and child abuse/neglect registry check.
