New Media Ventures (NMV) is a mission-driven venture fund and investor network focused on innovation to advance progressive change. Our mission is to find, support, and finance organizations that are telling new stories, building advocacy movements, and catalyzing civic engagement. Over the past 10 years, we have supported nearly 90 promising startups, many of which are now widely-recognized pillars of the social change community, from Hearken and Blavity to Swing Left, Mijente, and PushBlack. We are seeking a fundraising manager to help us take our impact to the next level.
We are looking for a leader to manage NMV’s fundraising efforts and motivate our team to meet and exceed our revenue goals. This is largely an internal-facing position focused on creating and executing a development plan to raise $4M+. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the success of fundraising initiatives, including special events, major gifts, institutional giving, sponsorships, donor prospecting and cultivation, and grant writing. We have several senior leaders who spend significant time working on fundraising (including our president, vice president of programs and partnerships, and investments team). With your help, our efforts will be more efficient and effective than ever before.
One of NMV’s goals is to democratize access to capital in the progressive movement. Our work is guided by a commitment to collective liberation and undoing centuries of oppression and marginalization of people of color, women, First Nations, disabled people, LGTBQ+ communities, and more. We believe that social change is best led by people who have significant personal experience of the problems that need to be solved. Manage all aspects of the fundraising program, which includes:
Strategy and management
Work closely with the vice president of programs and partnerships to shape NMV’s fundraising strategy
Develop the week-by-week fundraising plan, lead the weekly fundraising meeting, create revenue forecasts and scenarios as needed
Drive fundraising activity for the organization. Identify prospects, assign donors and prospects to members of the fundraising team, clarify action items, and support team members in their fundraising responsibilities
Partner with senior leadership to engage the board in its fundraising responsibilities
Fundraising operations, systems, and processes
Work closely with the operations associate to ensure robust fundraising operations, including: ensuring all gifts are appropriately recognized; meeting all stewardship and reporting deadlines; building and improving systems; and maintaining data on all past, current, and prospective donors via Salesforce dashboards and reports
Funder communications and stewardship
Work closely with the senior fundraising & communications associate to ensure all proposals, budgets, reports, and other funder-facing materials (emails, decks, cases for support, annual reports, etc.) are high quality and completed on time
Organize funder-facing events (webinars, gatherings once those are safe again, donor-specific events at the annual NMV Summit, etc.)
“Out the door” fundraising is not a required part of this position, but external fundraising responsibilities could be added based on candidates’ strengths and preferences
5+ years total experience in fundraising, project management, business development, and/or progressive campaigning
At least 2 of those years of experience must be in large-dollar fundraising, e.g. stewardship, major gifts, campaigns, and/or institutional giving
Cultural competency and a track record of working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds; commitment to participating in both individual and organizational work on equity, inclusion, and anti-oppression.
Ability to see the big picture and think strategically while also executing on discrete tasks
Skill at managing upwards and motivating team members to excel
Proficient with Google Docs and Google Sheets, and quick to learn new technology and tools
Highly organized and detail oriented, capable of balancing and prioritizing concurrent projects and deadlines
Deep mission alignment with NMV
Candidate pluses (note: we don't expect the successful candidate to match more than a handful of the list below):
Experience with Salesforce or other fundraising CRMs
Strong writing skills and/or experience with grant writing
Significant experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion or anti-oppression work
Deep familiarity with one or more marginalized communities in the U.S. such as communities of color, undocumented communities, low-wage workers, LGBTQ communities, disabled communities, Muslim communities, etc.
Demonstrated skill with graphic or web design
Existing relationships with the types of funders who fund NMV’s work
Deep familiarity with progressive politics and/or social justice movements
Experience working in a grantmaking or impact investing organization
Experience working in media, technology, or digital organizing
Lives in or near the San Francisco Bay Area or New York City
Location flexible. Team based in San Francisco Bay Area, currently working remotely. Candidate should be available to work during 9–5pm PST at least 3 days per week. We can provide additional flexibility for parents who are currently also doubling as teachers during the workday.
This position reports to the vice president of programs and partnerships
This is an exempt, full-time, salaried position
Salary range: $80-120k for a candidate based in the SF Bay Area or NYC metro area. The higher end of this range assumes additional experience and more alignment with Candidate Pluses above. For candidates living elsewhere, salary will be adjusted based on cost of living.
