Director of Finance
The Director of Finance is an exempt full-time position reporting to the CEO and will be responsible for the organization’s financial matters. This individual will lead operational management of the organization’s accounting, payroll, insurance and benefits, investments, and accountability processes. You will work independently, oversee staff and contractors as necessary, support and engage with the Board of Directors and the Audit and Investment Committees, and function as a key member of the senior leadership team and advisor to the CEO.
Primary Responsibilities
Manage CC’s accounting, and financial and reporting requirements, including day-to-day accounting transactions, periodic financial and management reporting, and all other financial, treasury, tax, and audit requirements. This includes leading the annual audit of CC’s financials, including cooperating with CC’s independent auditors in order to ensure a timely thorough audit that results in concrete implementable improvements to our processes and procedures on an annual basis.
Maintain a structure of compliant and robust financial policies and internal controls over financial accounting and reporting, which are effective in producing sound, accurate financial data as well as appropriate levels of disclosure for external reporting.
Direct financial and business planning, purchasing, and other operational areas.
Coordinate cross-functional components of the audit, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting for operating activities.
Own CC’s short and long term financial models and forecasts, including budget and FP&A processes.
Generate financial reports, budgets, and forecasts for management and the Board of Directors, inclusive of monthly dashboards that convey succinct and accurate information about the status of CC’s fundraising efforts and financial status
Provide input and support as needed for the activities of the Board of Directors, including the Audit Committee and Investment Committee.
Oversee all operational elements of benefits and payroll, ensuring recordkeeping & compliance, working closely with the Director of People & Operations.
Ensure that annual benefit plan negotiations, insurance coverage procurement, and ongoing payroll and contracting activities are fiscally sound, timely, and compliant.
Work with the General Counsel and Director of People & Operations to ensure that all corporate records are properly maintained according to document retention policies, including organization of files, and record storage.
Administration of CC’s expense reimbursement solution, Expensify.
Skills & Technical Proficiencies
In depth understanding of accounting processes, from basic transactions to financial and management reporting.
Experience with and a strong understanding of U.S. non-profit financial rules and regulations; public support test rules, 990 filings, and similar processes unique to 501(c)(3) organizations.
Ability to perform basic transactions of all cash & banking, account payables, grants and other receivables, fixed and other assets, accruals, payroll, expense and incomes.
Knowledge should include appropriate monthly and periodic close techniques and methodologies.
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles preferably, with an emphasis on nonprofit revenue recognition.
Knowledge of accounting for foreign operations, including FX accounting.
Experience managing and coordinating non-profit audits with domestic and foreign operations and multiple income streams.
Understanding of A-133 audit issues and government grants.
Experience managing banking and treasury relationships.
In-depth working knowledge of QuickBooks/QuickBooks Online. Must be able to exhibit the ability to use, process, and manage the software application (nonprofit version).
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, Vlookups, and macros.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and presentation effectiveness.
Excellent leadership and management skills along with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple functions.
Demonstrated excellence in independent management of complex projects.
Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment with a high degree of flexibility.
Required Education and Experience
4 year undergraduate degree in Finance/Accounting, CPA certification a plus
5+ years experience in nonprofit accounting, including grant accounting, job costing, compliance, and reporting
2+ years experience leading non-profit audits including IRS Form 990 preparations, and managing relationships with external auditors.
2+ years of supporting and leading human resources and staff management functions like payroll, benefits and insurance.
Experience working remotely.

Work Environment and Location
Creative Commons is a fully-distributed organization with no central office. This position is available to applicants in Canada and the US, in a remote working environment, provided they have reasonable mobility for necessary travel, and high-speed broadband access. Laptop/desktop computer and necessary resources are supplied.
Salary and Benefits
Creative Commons is a leading non-profit employer, offering competitive salaries and benefits, including health and wellness plans, annual retirement contributions, and a positive, supportive work environment. We offer competitive salary in the range for this position from $100,000 – $125,000 USD, commensurate with relevant skills, experience, and location.
