Senior Director of Finance
WHO WE ARE
The Humane League is an international farm animal advocacy group. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, The Humane League’s budget has grown to $10m and with this role, we are positioning the organization for continued growth. We have a current staff size of 80+ dispersed across the country and internationally.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
Your position reports to the Vice President, Operations and plays an integral role in The Humane League’s financial management through financial planning and analysis, financial strategy, financial reporting, and budgeting. You will be responsible for all aspects of the organization’s financial strategy, including partnering with the VP to develop and maintain sound short-term and long range financial management strategies to ensure sustainable fiscal health and support the organization’s goals and objectives. You are ideal for this position because you are an innate problem solver, driven by analytics and metrics. You are a humble leader and enjoy working collaboratively. You know how to effectively manage time and resources. You have extensive experience in the nonprofit sector.
This is a full-time, remote position. This position requires occasional travel, equivalent to approximately 2-3 trips per year. We are only able to consider applicants who possess United States work authorization.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Executive Team and Department Heads; monitor budget-to-actual results, forecasts, analyze financial performance
Develop a finance team and provide hands-on leadership in the management and reconciliation of U.S. and international accounts payable and receivable
Prepare managerial financial reports and provide updates on financial status to key leadership internally and externally
Work with the People Operations team to process payroll for the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Brazil, and prepare annual payroll compliance testing
Prepare local, federal, and state tax returns; and compliance with local, federal, and state reporting obligations; coordinate tax rate changes, law changes, nexus updates, and new taxing jurisdictions
Prepare sales-and-use-tax filing for multiple states and ensure entries are accurate and payments are made in a timely fashion
Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, and liaise and consult with external auditors and the Board of Directors on audit and other matters
Review and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures to mitigate risk
Manage THL’s investment strategy, ensuring that assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate
Provide best-practice guidelines with respect to organization-wide processes, including planning annual budgets, maintaining operational efficiencies, and managing the financial structure of international entities
Work with the fundraising team to manage revenue channels, including grants and all other donation types
Perform daily finance-operations and other related duties as necessary, requiring strong judgment and initiative
REQUIRED SKILLS
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
Five to seven years of experience as a Director of Finance, Controller or equivalent
Extensive work experience in nonprofit accounting
Experience with grant management
Experience with audit, legal compliance, and budget development
Proven track record of budgeting, forecasting, and project planning
Success seeing beyond the numbers, identifying trends and new possibilities
Advanced knowledge of Excel, Google Sheets, QuickBooks
Strong organizational skills and be able to prioritize tasks efficiently in a fast paced environment
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and be able to work in a team environment

Starting salary $85,000
