Director of Communications & Development
We’re looking for a compelling storyteller and pitcher, strong writer, and avid social networker who wants to use these skills for good by advancing bold health justice goals and ensuring access to lifesaving treatment for all people with HIV worldwide.
This is an integral position in a small, dynamic team that is dedicated to achieving universal access to treatment and care for all people living with HIV around the world. As our Director of Communications & Development, you will work with our team to lead Health GAP’s strategic communications and implement core aspects of our fundraising strategy to advance our core campaigns and position our organization for greater impact.
You will communicate Health GAP’s mission and work in compelling ways to all our audiences, including donors, policymakers, activists, students and young people, reporters and others. When you’re not pitching a new story or opinion piece to the media, helping staff hone the message in a new report or factsheet, or crafting a series of fundraising emails for a new individual donor appeal, you’ll be writing compelling concept notes and proposals for major private foundation donors that describe bold strategies that will advance access to health care for people living with, and affected by, HIV around the world. You are able to quickly write powerful (and at times witty), high-quality copy and to translate complex policy analysis for a wide range of audiences—including funders, grassroots activists and decision-makers.
Responsibilities
Communications
  • Develop and implement strategic communications goals in support of Health GAP’s campaigns and ensure Health GAP is using its external communications to position us for success
  • Oversee the production and management of all Health GAP external communication, e.g. reports, analyses, research, action alerts, speeches, social media feeds and initiatives, op-eds, fact sheets, infographics and videos
  • Write high quality copy for op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases and statements, reports, blogs, speeches, and other materials as needed
  • Pitch stories to reporters, editorial board writers, columnists, bloggers, producers and other content developers, as well as generate persuasive press materials
  • Develop and deploy communications products that showcase the work of Health GAP’s allies in the global South and grassroots activists in the United States and, where appropriate, support partners in communicating their work
  • Manage relationships with external consultants, including graphic designers and web developers, and ensure that resources for such support are used for maximum impact
  • Leverage earned and social media to achieve communications, fundraising and advocacy goals
  • Improve, strengthen and expand Health GAP’s media contacts and relationships with media
  • Monitor and identify newsworthy and social media trends and angles and seize emergent opportunities to advance Health GAP’s mission
  • Ensure that Health GAP is regarded as a priority source for expert analysis and interpretation and ensure the integrity, quality and accuracy of all external communication
Fundraising
  • Work with Health GAP’s leadership team to develop communications elements of a multi-year fundraising strategy that will position the organization to achieve its programmatic goals and advance its overall mission
  • Developing messaging and materials to cultivate, and solicit major individual donors, with support from Health GAP’s board and leadership team
  • Draft emails, letters, reports, social media and oversee the production of videos and other graphic elements, as part of strategic individual donor fundraising campaigns/appeals
  • Write concept notes, proposals, letters of interest and funder reports for institutional donors, working closely with relevant staff
  • Supervise fundraising and communications interns and provide ongoing guidance and coaching to improve the performance of staff and volunteers supporting these areas of work
