The team at ICIJ is small but highly ambitious, creative, energetic and passionate about our mission: producing investigative journalism with global impact. We are a global network of members and partners who work collaboratively on large cross-border investigations.

International Consortium of Investigative Journalists - ICIJ
Development and Outreach Manager
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) is seeking an ambitious and creative self-starter for a Development and Outreach Manager. This is a new role at ICIJ that would encompass fundraising, external relations/outreach and brand building. You would be working on the development team and collaborating closely with members of ICIJ’s editorial staff to utilize their expertise and their relationships with our global network to contribute to ICIJ’s long-term sustainability.
The role would focus on several key initiatives at ICIJ.
First, you’d be helping us diversify our revenue streams by seeking out new business development and fundraising opportunities that align with ICIJ’s mission and goals. This would include helping develop a robust network of major donors through ICIJ’s first-ever Global Advisory Council, which is in the early stages of development. It would also involve leveraging our network of global media partners to consider how we can tap into fundraising opportunities and donor networks in other parts of the world.
Second, you’d play a key role in building visibility for the ICIJ brand and communicating our mission, strategy and impact to external audiences. This would include developing an events strategy and helping plan and implement a range of events, from small, intimate dinners with select groups of donors to high-profile public events with partner organizations.
Responsibilities include:
  • Serving as lead team member and primary point of contact for ICIJ’s Global Advisory Council. Liaising with council members and keeping them updated on ICIJ developments, responding to their questions or requests, and scheduling and conducting in-person meetings. Developing engagement and cultivation strategies tailored to each member’s needs and preferences.
  • Identifying and recruiting new candidates for the council, in coordination with development staff.
  • Creating and implementing an events and outreach strategy that introduces ICIJ’s work to new audiences and raises our profile around the world.
  • Providing administrative and logistical support for events, which can include venue planning and site visits, drafting events-related material, making travel arrangements, managing event RSVPs, and coordinating with ICIJ’s product team on promotion, social media and outreach.
  • Organizing speaking opportunities and preparing talking points for ICIJ staff, partner or members at relevant conferences and other events.
  • Experience in nonprofit development and fundraising, preferably with a focus on major gifts or high net worth individuals.
  • Strong relationship builder with emotional intelligence and an ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Good people skills.
  • Event planning experience.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to travel, both domestic and international.
  • Comfortable working in an international context. Cross-cultural sensitivity is necessary.
  • Tech savvy. Familiarity with Salesforce, MailChimp and EventBrite a plus.
  • A background in journalism or nonprofit media is helpful, but not required.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) is a global network of more than 260 investigative journalists from 100 countries and territories who collaborate on large-scale investigations on issues that do not stop at national borders: cross-border crime, corruption and the accountability of power. Recent projects include Luanda LeaksChina CablesImplant Files and more.
ICIJ’s core team is small but ambitious. We are headquartered in Washington, D.C., but we have staff based around the world — New York, Paris, Sydney, London, Dublin, Budapest and elsewhere. The right candidate will be comfortable working in a non-traditional and dispersed office environment with colleagues who work remotely across various continents and time zones. This position is based in Washington, D.C. or New York, but we will also consider candidates who can work remotely.
ICIJ is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to hiring employees from diverse backgrounds with excellent journalism skills. People of color, women, LGBTQ, and differently-abled people are strongly encouraged to apply.
