About the organization:
Solar United Neighbors is a fast-growing mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a clean, equitable, resilient energy system that benefits everyone. We are the only organization in the country dedicated to representing the needs and interests of solar owners and supporters. We envision a clean, equitable energy system that directs control and benefits back to local communities, with solar on every roof and money in every pocket. At Solar United Neighbors, we believe that all of us have a stake in a future where every community participates in the financial benefits of our energy grid’s ongoing diversification from big central plants and passive consumers to a wider mix of distributed production & renewable energy. We are building a clean energy movement by helping people go solar, join together, and fight for their energy rights.
On the local level, we run twelve state programs: DC, MD, VA, WV, OH, FL, MN, PA, TX, CO, IN, and AZ - and we are expanding to new states each year. Each state program promotes solar throughout its jurisdiction through education, events, volunteer opportunities, advocacy, and helping people go solar.
Our organization is scaling rapidly and is 50/50 remote staff/in-office (DC-based) staff. We are a fast-paced, dynamic, multi-faceted work environment, ideal for someone who is looking to dive in and contribute to the workings of a growing, mission-driven non-profit organization.
About the position:
Solar United Neighbors seeks an Engagement Specialist to provide integral support to our state programs and program directors by coordinating local engagement activities, including volunteer opportunities, solar celebrations, and more. The Engagement Specialist will report to the Director of Engagement, serve as the primary engagement program point of contact for state program directors and field staff on regular engagement needs, and collaborate with the Engagement team on new engagement initiatives.
Responsibilities will include:
  • Attending virtual bi-weekly state check in meetings with state teams and actively supporting the coordination and implementation of local engagement programming; driving progress toward each state program’s engagement goals.
  • Working with state-based field staff to identify, coordinate, and implement opportunities for volunteer opportunities or engagement events to support the growth of local solar co-ops and state networks, expand the capacity of state-based field staff members, and deepen relationships with solar supporters.
  • Coordinating all one-off state-based engagement activities, events, and opportunities, including solar celebrations, social events, volunteer opportunities (including tabling, flyering, canvassing, digital outreach, and more), advocacy events, solar open houses, and other engagement activities.
  • Managing regular email communication with all state volunteer lists about upcoming opportunities through our Every Action database and email platform, as well as coordinating with individual volunteers about specific opportunities.
  • Creating event RSVP pages, Facebook events, flyers, and other collateral needed for events, including printing and mailing resources to volunteers and staff members as needed.
  • Ensuring up to date tracking of all volunteer activities and event attendance in our Salesforce and Every Action databases.
  • Creating success stories highlighting volunteers and solar homeowners in each state for web content; creating opportunities to feature these solar stories and appreciate our volunteers.
  • Checking in regularly with the Director of Engagement and supporting the Director of Engagement with new projects and program needs as they arise.
Preferred Experience:
  • BA/BS degree, or equivalent
  • 2 - 5 years of experience in any of the following: volunteer management, event planning, program coordination, working on campaigns, digital or in person organizing, canvassing, and direct outreach.
  • Strong ability to multi-task and stay organized; comfortable working on many different short and long-term projects concurrently.
  • Strong work ethic and experience working remotely in an efficient manner with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to problem solve, contribute new ideas, innovate, and most importantly follow through on all aspects of the job.
  • Confident working independently, but with an openness and desire to receive feedback and collaborate with supervisor and team members.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with strong attention to detail.
  • An interest in solar energy, renewable energy, and/or climate change.
  • A desire to learn from others, support team members, and build upon existing programs.
  • Comfortable using Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite (experience with online database platforms like Every Action, Salesforce, or Wordpress, a plus)
This is a full-time year-round remote staff position with full health insurance, sick leave, and paid vacation benefits.
