MoveOn has a particularly important role to play in the Trump era. We are working to defeat Donald Trump and the GOP in 2020 by building a powerful, multiracial, and economic populist movement that will give voters something to vote for, not just against—and we’re also working to defend communities that are on the front lines of attacks from Trump and the GOP, including immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ community, and women. In service of that mission, in 2020 and beyond, MoveOn will drive impactful, movement-connected, multichannel, nimble campaigns aimed at impact.
The Director of Email Fundraising provides leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day management of MoveOn’s email fundraising, which makes up 30-50% of the total volume of emails that MoveOn sends to its members and brings in more than half of MoveOn’s revenue.
Manage the team responsible for brainstorming, developing, writing, and optimizing compelling email fundraisers to raise millions of dollars for MoveOn’s issue campaigns and electoral programs.
  • You will lead the dynamic, committed, high-impact, low-ego email fundraising team, which must hit ambitious financial goals and is responsible for well over half of MoveOn’s budget. You will need to nimbly move among concepts, support the work of your colleagues, load-balance, and coordinate across the organization to create strong campaigning-driven content that meets ambitious goals.  
  • You will manage MoveOn’s email fundraising program. To support MoveOn’s efforts in 2020 and beyond, you’ll work with your team to set tight deadlines and stick to rigorous drafting and testing schedules and be ready to make the call to cancel all existing plans and turn on a dime to rush out rapid-response tests when news breaks.
  • You will write, edit, and supervise quality control and sign-off to keep emails in a MoveOn style and engaging to MoveOn audience. As the leader of the Email Fundraising Team, you’ll be responsible for ensuring a continuous stream of high performing emails that motivate MoveOn members to donate to our campaigns. In addition to writing top-performing original drafts, you will offer everything from minor edits to major overhauls to other people’s drafts to make them more punchy, compelling, timely, developed, detailed, and full of plans that excite MoveOn members and inspire them to give. 
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills. A proven track record, with 5-10 years of experience in writing strong fundraising emails, is a must, along with the ability to write fundraising drafts in a variety of styles, ranging from short but substantive and compelling rapid-response drafts to longer, well-documented, bulleted drafts that stretch on for as long as 2-3 pages.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to think analytically. You must be able to set and stick to demanding schedules and clearly communicate with colleagues as timelines change; manage multiple drafts and multiple versions of the same draft—for example, managing monthly, weekly, and one-time versions of the same draft—while also ensuring that complex longitudinal tests continue unimpeded. You should be comfortable combining analytics and A/B testing with educated guesses and rules of thumb. You’ll need to devise rigorous testing protocols for day-to-day fundraising, and also be able to make decisions quickly and confidently in rapid-response moments.
  • The ability to plan and be nimble. Some of our fundraisers are optimized slowly and methodically while others are based on the rapidly-shifting news environment. Your judgement about when to stick to existing plans vs when to pull out all the stops to rush out a rapid-response send is crucial to your team’s success. You must be excellent at optimization and have a good sense for what campaigns will perform well in the current news environment. 
  • Skill, sensitivity, and thoughtfulness around race, gender, class, and other aspects of identity. You need to have the sensitivity and skill to engage in nuanced conversations about these topics in your internal and external communications.
  • Deep understanding of technology, tools, and list segmentation. Prior experience with complex project management, segmentation, queries, and databases is a must. You need to be tech-savvy and a fast learner. You need to be comfortable driving projects forward and able to supervise, write protocols for, and implement complex targeting and segmentation.
  • Team spirit. We have an outsized impact on the world given our level of resources.To have the impact we do with a relatively small team requires people working together, trusting each other, communicating honestly, and pitching in on all major projects—as well as on daily tasks, large and small.
Location: Position may be based anywhere in the continental United States. May require occasional travel.
Reports to: Director of Fundraising Innovation and Integrated Marketing
Classification, Salary, and Benefits:  Full-time, competitive salary including benefits such as 100%-employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for all staff and their children; 401k plan with employer contribution, employer-paid premiums for life insurance; four weeks accrued paid vacation time per year; 18 weeks of paid parental leave (birth, adoption, foster care placement of a child), 10 days accrued paid sick time; 10 staff holidays, professional development budget of $1,000, monthly cell phone and internet reimbursement of $175 per month, home office subsidy, and provide everything needed for your home office.
