Program Specialist (Contract)
This contract position will contribute to helping streamline the foundations programs (Writer’s Workshops, Public Readings, Legacy Awards) and develop systems for managing daily work flows and program administration (email management, author/publisher communication, etc.). This position is primarily remote, but will require the occasional in person meeting and on-site support for events in Washington, DC. Applicants should be based in the DMV.  
Administrative Support
  • Manage the Hurston/Wright service account and inbound voice messaging system. Help create systems to organize, categorize and maintain an increasingly large flow of emails and partnership requests.  
  • Analyze current work flows, suggest and design in collaboration with the Executive Director systems/processes for managing administrative and programmatic tasks. 
  • Additional administrative tasks that support daily Foundation operations 
Program/Event Support
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to review all programs (Writing Workshops, Public Readings and Legacy Awards) and develop systems and processes to streamline communication, data collection, data storage and follow-up after events.  
  • Provide on-site support for public readings, writing workshops and the annual Legacy Awards 
Special Projects
  • Special literary projects as agreed upon with Executive Director
  • This contract requires the ability to analyze undefined tasks and recommend and then execute a plan of action
  • Minimum four years’ experience in program and event management, preferably within the non-profit and/or literary arts fields 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Canva, HubsSpot, CRMs and other web-based organization tools 
  • Entrepreneurial, Proactive, flexible and able to work independently and collaboratively with members of the Hurston/Wright team 
  • An ability to multitask and perform under tight deadlines 
  • Accuracy, strong organizational skills and attention to detail required
  • Demonstrated communication, interpersonal and strong writing skills are necessary
  • Excellent analytical and project management skills 
  • Knowledge of the African-American literary canon and contemporary writers is a plus
  • Proficiency with social media and basic photography is desirable
  • A degree in a related field (Business, Non-Profit Management etc) is desirable but not essential 
$25/Hour @ approximately 60-80 hours per month
