As a philanthropic intermediary, Borealis helps connect grantmakers to organizations that meet their mission. We provide a high level of service to our funders and grantees by conducting our work in a manner that is collaborative, transparent, and accountable. We respond promptly to the needs and interests of our partners by staying abreast of changing policy and social landscapes. We educate grantmakers and non-profits organizations on the important role intermediaries play in the philanthropic sector, and endeavor to share our knowledge with the broader field. In carrying out this vision, we ultimately hope to change the way philanthropy works.
Overview Of The Position
Reporting to the Vice President of Operations and Finance, the Development Officer will have two primary functions: Fundraising strategy for the current 10 collaborative funds at Borealis; and to support the development of new business and possible additional areas of service in future years. Borealis is currently funded by private foundations, with a small number of individual donors. The majority of donor development and cultivation currently occurs within private philanthropy; although there is a possibility of funding diversification in future years.
Major Responsibilities
Fundraising strategy for current Borealis collaborative funds:
  • Work with the Initiative Directors and Program Officers to develop and implement fundraising plans that includes goals, strategies, and activities to reach target audiences.
  • Ensure coordination in funder outreach among existing and new funds and leverage opportunities for joint fundraising.
  • Provide grant writing support as needed.
  • Develop and maintain fundraising calendars and manage deadlines with relevant staff in the program and finance departments.
  • Create proposal and reporting templates for each fund and work with program staff to review and edit proposals and reports prior to submission.
  • Work closely with Impact and Learning and Communications staff in the creation and utilization of fund collateral with current donors and prospective donors
  • Provide leadership and training for staff on fundraising efforts, including sharing of best practices and provide tools, information and resources to strengthen fundraising efforts
  • Maintain and ensure quality control with donor database so current and prospective donor correspondence files are consistently updated and accurate.
  • Work closely with program staff and finance department to monitor fundraising budget to actuals.
New Business Development
  • Work with President and Vice Presidents in outreach for new potential funds or other projects
  • Support the preparation of proposals for new donor collaborative funders. Create grant templates and provide new grant writing language as needed.
  • Provide research, resources, build and connect with stakeholders and colleagues to identify opportunities for partnerships and prospects with new potential donors
  • Develop and analyze strategy for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding new donors
Additional Duties
  • Participate in regular cross-department meetings with staff from Impact and Learning, Communications, Grants Management, and Finance.
  • Manage the development department budget.
  • Prepare Board and funder reports on overall fundraising progress.
  • Conduct grant and donor related research and maintain active data files.
  • Provide grant related system support and manage multiple funding portal submissions.
Qualifications
The Development Officer should ideally possess the following qualifications and personal attributes:
  • 5+ years’ experience raising money for social justice issues within philanthropic and/or non-profit organizations.
  • Strong familiarity with intermediary philanthropy.
  • Excellent writing skills that demonstrate the ability to write clear and compelling content for donor audiences.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to involve and work collaboratively and effectively with peers in joint and shared efforts.
  • Extensive experience with CRM platforms (Salesforce preferred).
  • An ability to perform effectively under pressure and to practice strong organizational skills when faced with multiple time-sensitive priorities.
  • Experience that demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppression values.
  • Ability to work remotely, within a virtual organization, with staff members throughout the country.

Benefits
Status:  Full-time, Regular, Exempt, benefits eligible
Salary Range: $90-115k
Location: Flexible Location, USA*
Reports to: Vice President of Operations & Finance)
