iThrive Games Foundation prepares teens to thrive by meeting them where they are and working in partnership towards a world where all have the voice, choice, and agency to reach their full potential.

Director of Communications
We use games and game design to equip teens with the social and emotional skills they need to be healthy and resilient, tools to support and protect their mental health and well-being, systems thinking they need to recognize inequity, and meaningful opportunities to imagine and design a better world.
Reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Scientist, the Director of Communications will:
  • Set and execute the strategy for communications and public relations, consistently articulating the mission of iThrive Games Foundation across all messages and collateral.
  • Ensure that iThrive’s mission and its programs and products are disseminated effectively to key stakeholders, audiences, and the media and viewed as innovative, of high quality, and essential for preparing teens to thrive.
  • Work closely with staff across the organization to inform and evaluate iThrive’s communications strategy; ensure excellence, creativity, consistency, and effectiveness in messaging; create, organize, and manage communications collateral, knowledge, and data across all communications channels (e.g., website, blogs, podcast, social media, press); establish, grow, and maintain public relations contacts and increase effective media coverage; and enact and measure compelling and effective outreach to external stakeholders across iThrive’s initiatives, partnerships, and funders.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan in collaboration with the iThrive team, board, funders, and partners. Decide who, where, and when to disseminate messages and calls for action incorporating diverse communications channels to maximize reach.
  • Establish relationships with and manage media contacts, nationally and locally, and secure media coverage to support iThrive’s mission, products, and programs.
  • Plan and manage the development, distribution, maintenance, and organization of all online and print content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action, including, but not limited to, iThrive’s website, newsletters, brochures, annual report, blogs, podcasts, social media content, and advertisements.
  • Manage website improvements, maintenance, and content, ensuring that new and consistent information and collateral (article links, stories, program updates, blogs, and events) are posted weekly, consistent with project and organizational goals, and that messages reach identified audiences with the desired, measurable impact.
  • Secure and oversee external contractors responsible for iThrive’s communications efforts, including website administration and development, graphic design, copywriting, copyediting, and printing.
  • Create and manage iThrive’s editorial calendar including content creation across communications channels, collecting and analyzing data to evaluate weekly, monthly, and quarterly reach, modifying the calendar to continually increase reach and impact across key audience segments, including testing out new tactics and employing industry best practices to increase engagement.
  • Track, measure, and report on engagement levels across iThrive’s communications channels over time, and adjust the communications strategy to improve reach and impact.
  • Design and organize events to engage iThrive’s audiences and create momentum for our mission, products, and programs.
  • Stay on top of relevant news and events including, but not limited to, the intersections of teen development, social and emotional learning, mental health and well-being, games and game design. Weave innovative perspectives into iThrive’s messaging.
  • Collaborate with iThrive’s network of partners to inform and propel communications activities.
  • Willingness and desire to work remotely, with a remote team.
  • A minimum of 7 years of communications experience, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex (number and variety of constituents) nonprofit entity, and covering areas such as public relations, website content, newsletters, social media, and donor communications.
  • Ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, disseminating it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels.
  • Authentic interest in and passion for iThrive’s mission and approach; commitment to working with and amongst teens especially those living furthest from opportunity.

  • Highly collaborative style.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating communications strategies and
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills; ability to translate academic or scholarly writing to compelling and digestible content.
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key
initiatives concurrently, reliably progressing initiatives through to completion.
  • Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence.”
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and
to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, teens, community partners, external contractors, board members, volunteers,
donors, program participants, and other supporters.
  • Self starter, able to work independently; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives; invested in designing and launching communications activities, evaluating their impact, and iterating to yield greater effectiveness.
This is a remote position, however, there is a preference for candidates located in or willing to relocate to the greater Boston area.
