US Human Rights Network Overview
The US Human Rights Network (USHRN) is the only entity with the exclusive mission of supporting and providing a community space for the domestic human rights movement. Currently USHRN is made up of more than 300 member and partner organizations working on multiple human rights issues. USHRN remains an anchor of the domestic rights movement and supports a bold, broad-based, people-centered human rights movement—one that is comprised primarily of grassroots and community-based groups and individuals working collectively across issue areas.
Position Overview
Are you a passionate, creative changemaker with plenty of energy to fight for good? Are you on top of the latest social trends? Do you know how to gain followers and create viral content? Do you have graphic design experience and a good eye for creating strong visuals? If you want to use those skills to fight for social justice, this might be the right role for you.
The Communications Consultant at USHRN is an entry-level position that will provide recent graduates with an opportunity to participate in community engagement and advocacy projects on a wide variety of human rights issues including but not limited to: the rights of Indigenous Peoples; immigrants’ rights; criminal justice; reproductive freedom; racial justice; and international human rights mechanisms. The Communications Consultant will be supervised by the USHRN Communications Director.
This is a part-time role with a maximum of 20 hours per week for a commitment of at least six months. The Consultant is expected to work from home in an adequate office setting and have access to a computer with reliable internet. The Communications Director and Consultant will meet once per week in-person or via phone as needed. Communication will take place primarily over phone and email. This is a remote working role and may be filled by anyone residing in the US.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Improve USHRN’s social media strategy and develop our engagement with specific tools including: Instagram stories and highlights, Facebook live, and more
  • Use online software such as Canva or personal computer applications to create engaging images, flyers, infographics, and other content for use on Instagram and other social media platforms
  • Use USHRN’s brand guidelines to create engaging content and communicate our key messages to followers
  • Daily checking of social justice and human rights headlines and sharing/responding to news via social media engagement
  • Independent research related to human rights topics (International Mechanisms, campaigns, education, and communications strategies/tools)
  • Tracking and analyzing social media engagement using online tools, with the goal of increasing social media followership 
  • Light video editing/creation if experience allows
  • Updating USHRN website with new materials
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of major human rights issues in the United States and the ongoing movements to defend human rights nationally
  • Strong written communications skills
  • Previous experience creating and updating social media accounts
  • Experience creating original flyers, infographics, and other graphic images
  • Time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Web design/HTML and video-editing experience is a plus
  • Experience and willingness to work with people from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and a broad range of ages, ideological positions, and religious views
  • Willingness and ability to use personal computer for work and to work remotely
