Community Development Coordinator
Remote position (Based in Southern California)
The Position
Do you want to address overdose and drug related harms in California? Are you interested in expanding syringe services programs (SSPs) in under-served areas of Southern California? Are you committed to building power in communities of color to eliminate health disparities caused by the war on drugs? Do you want to work for a dynamic organization committed to promoting the health and dignity of individuals and communities who are affected by drug use? Harm Reduction Coalition is seeking an energetic self starter who wants to improve the lives of people who use drugs, people engaged in sex work, and communities of color.
The Community Development Coordinator will extend Harm Reduction Coalition’s work in addressing drug related harms in Southern California communities, with an emphasis on the impact that the war on drugs has on racial/ethnic health disparities. As a member of the Capacity Building Team, this position contributes to Harm Reduction Coalition’s ongoing strategy to reduce overdose in California, specifically in the most marginalized communities. This person will respond to requests from the community related to training needs, community building, resources for syringe services programs, and technical assistance. Other duties will include reviewing and revising materials and curricula, attending community organizing events and conferences, and other research-related activities that inform and improve Harm Reduction Coalition’s overall capacity building strategy. 
The ideal candidate is an individual who enjoys a fast-paced environment and who brings experience working in harm reduction programs with an eye for community building and organizational development.
Organization Description
Harm Reduction Coalition is a national advocacy and capacity-building organization that works to promote the health and dignity of individuals and communities who are affected by drug use. As a national organization with primary offices in New York and California, we advance harm reduction policy and practice through five core programs:
  1. Harm reduction policy and advocacy;
  2. National training and capacity building initiatives;
  3. National and regional conferences;
  4. Publications and resources, and;
  5. Technical assistance on overdose prevention education, hepatitis C prevention and treatment; syringe access expansion; and the US overdose crisis.
Collectively, these core programs work toward our North Star Statement: Harm Reduction Coalition creates spaces for dialogue and action that help heal the harms caused by racialized drug policies.
Duties And Activities
  • Serve as the primary contact for Southern California SSPs to provide support for new SSPs including organizational development and resources, overdose prevention and naloxone distribution programs and practices, responding to issues related to syringe litter and community concerns, and ongoing training needs.
  • Develop training and resources specific to SSPs, including videos and guides to starting SSPs, approaches to community education and collaboration, organizational development resources, program delivery using a harm reduction methodology, centering people who use drugs in development and delivery of program services, data collection systems, and quality improvement; Materials to be developed in English and Spanish.
  • Deliver and coordinate capacity building and training services for Southern California in collaboration with Capacity Building and Community Development Managers including promotion of training services, planning and delivery of regional training sessions, resource development, remote training via webinars, development of communications, and coordination of California harm reduction program activities to expand harm reduction training to additional settings, including drug treatment, health care, housing, criminal justice, and other programs who work with people who use drugs and/or are engaged in sex work.
  • Offer support with statewide policy initiatives and projects, including attending lobby days, legislative activities, community organizing and training, and collaborations with other coalitions on related policy initiatives.
  • Cultivate the leadership and meaningful involvement of people who use drugs in California through co-facilitation and speaking opportunities, communications, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for contract-specific work in a timely fashion; analyze relevant data and training evaluations on an ongoing basis.
  • Support with the development and dissemination of California-specific communications, including weekly newsletters, podcasts, press releases, blog posts, and other outward-facing communications.
  • Review data from communications and project/event management systems to build contacts and reach with special attention to audiences to tailor future newsletters and training opportunities.
  • Apply a racial justice lens to harm reduction and center the voices of people with lived experiences of drug use, HIV, hepatitis C, overdose, homelessness, incarceration, and sex work in all work.
  • Participate in relevant staff and department meetings.
  • Participate in and support the National conference and California specific conferences.
  • 2-4 years of work experience in non-profit program work, experience with training delivery and/or technical assistance, coalition-building, community organizing, and/or delivery of services to people who use drugs, native communities, spanish speaking communities, and people of color.
  • Familiarity and experience with training curriculum design and facilitation.
  • Passionate about using harm reduction principles and approach to address the intersection of health disparities among people of color and drug use.
  • Working knowledge of racial health disparities, specifically those impacting Native and/or Latin-x communities.
  • Must be detail-oriented, possess excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Comfort and proficiency in current technology products including, but not limited to, G Suite, Microsoft Suite, webinar software for training, and project management systems.
  • Must be comfortable working independently and remotely.
  • Must be able to deliver training in Spanish and produce written materials in Spanish.
Salary Range
$50,000 - $60,000
